Barb Powers Recognized For Her Ongoing Work With Beyond Celiac

October 23, 2020

Beyond Celiac, the nation’s leading catalyst for a cure for celiac disease, is pleased to announce that Barb Powers has been chosen as the 2020 recipient of the Samuel Gee Award.

The Samuel Gee Award—named after an English pediatrician who first published the complete modern description of celiac disease and identified the role that diet plays in the disease in 1888—is awarded annually to an individual who has shown exceptional dedication to Beyond Celiac and its mission. In recognition of her tireless commitment to Beyond Celiac and the celiac disease community, this  honor will be awarded to Barb on October 23 at the organization’s first virtual gala, An Evening Beyond Celiac.

Barb has devoted more than a decade of volunteer service to Beyond Celiac, including serving as secretary on the Board of Directors since 2014. Barb and her husband Bruce share a daughter with celiac disease and understand all too well how serious this autoimmune disease can be. In addition to working to increase the availability of safe gluten-free options in schools and universities, Barb has dedicated herself to Beyond Celiac research efforts for treatments and a cure.

In recognition of Barb’s commitment and accomplishments, Pennsylvania Congresswoman  Madeleine Dean has  awarded  her with a  US House of Representatives Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition.

“Barb truly does work to make the world a better place,” said Beyond Celiac CEO Alice Bast, adding that she is, “a friend to me and our organization, an advocate who has invested in celiac disease research and who can see a future in which her daughter and all of our community can one day be free of the burdens of celiac disease. There is just no way to thank her enough.”

Purchase admission to An Evening Beyond Celiac virtual gala on October 23, 2020 and tune in to Barb receiving the 2020 Samuel Gee Award.
