Gluten-Free Watchdog Follows Up on Product Alert: Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar Chips

4/8/2014

Back in February 2014, Tricia Thompson, MS, RD of Gluten Free Watchdog released a product alert to the gluten-free community about Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar Chips.  These chips were wrongly labeled gluten-free, as they were made with malt vinegar and malt extract – two ingredients that cannot be used in products labeled gluten-free per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) rule on gluten-free labeling.

Now, Thompson is bringing the issue of Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar back to the forefront, as this product is still on store shelves bearing a gluten-free label and certification symbol by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO), despite their gluten-containing status.  The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) encourages you to read the full report and explanation from Thompson on Boulder Canyon Chips.  The report provides explanatory language from a recent webinar hosted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Medical Nutrition Practice Group, which featured an FDA staff member.
