Problem: Awareness is growing, but many are unaware of the symptoms of celiac disease.

Solution: Beyond Celiac empowers people with celiac disease symptoms to complete a checklist to better understand symptoms and initiate the testing process with their doctor.

In 2006, Beyond Celiac was the first organization to release a Celiac Disease Symptoms Checklist. Available at www.DoIHaveCeliac.org, this free, user-friendly, personal risk-factor tool helps people start a conversation with their doctor about celiac disease testing. Through use of the checklist, self-initiated diagnosis has proven to prompt a more rapid and accurate diagnosis than relying on physicians’ advice alone. In patients diagnosed with celiac disease after completing this Beyond Celiac resource, more than 55% initiated their own testing and diagnosis, compared to 31% receiving a diagnosis initiated by their physician. This work was presented at the International Meeting on Coeliac Disease, Mastering the Coeliac Condition: From Medicine to Social Sciences and Food Technology, in Florence, Italy in 2012.
